our dogs.
Raising and training dogs has been a lifelong dream of mine.
Twenty-two years ago I purchased the home where I am now for
the sole reason that it was perfect to raise and train my dogs. So
for 22 years I have been learning as much as I can about the
breeds that I love, and then picking out the dogs that have the
excellent background to produce the best puppies that have the
qualities that I admire in the individual breeds. If you ask me
which is my favorite breed, it would probably be a different
answer each time, as I absolutely adore German Shepherds,
Labs, and Cocker Spaniels. I got my first Pyrenees a couple
years ago after having coyotes coming in our yard, I studied
them for over a year before, choosing my pair, and still had no
idea of the unique dogs that they are. I can truly say they are
one of a kind. I think Rat Terriers are neat little dogs, that are
very fun to play with, I also admire Standard Poodles. I have
many times asked myself, "if I could only have one dog, which
would it be" the answer I continue coming up to is "I can't
imagine only having one, because, I couldn't decide."
We live on 18 acres, surrounded by 100's of acres of
conservation land, where we spend hours playing with our dogs,
running through the woods with them, playing ball, Frisbee, or
just throwing a stick for them to fetch. They love to play in the
ponds. All are well mannered and have excellent temperaments.
We have grandchildren that love to play with the puppies and
adult dogs. Our German Shepherds will actually put a stick in
the children's' hands to get them to play fetch with them.
We enjoy taking our dogs fishing. I have to admit when I take
my Labrador retrievers, I don't catch many fish, because I get
carried away throwing sticks in the water for them to fetch. They
love the water. They do come from a line of hunters, we don't
hunt, but, many of our puppies have been trained for hunting.
I also enjoy taking them for rides in the car, the bank tellers
always have a treat for them and they really get excited when
they see the bank, because they know what to expect. My
husband takes them for rides in the truck (the guy thing) to get
firewood and other supplies. (I think maybe he is training them
to do the work, but, I can't prove it!).
My husband enjoys building things for the property. All our dogs
are used to the sounds of the saws, hammers, and other noisy
equipment, because they love to hang out while he is working.
Then they like to check out the "new stuff" when a project is
completed.
Another game our dogs love to play is hide and seek. My
husband sneaks off from them and hides in the woods, I tell them
to go find him and off they go. They really get excited when they
find him. It is a lot of fun, but it also helps in their future training.
